Cycling is one of my favourite hobbies and I have had many great trips to Italy to watch the Giro and cycle the high mountain passes of the Italian Alps and the Dolomites. Though the Tour de France is a great race and the most famous in cycling there is something special about the Giro. It is intimate and so Italian, where as the tour though France has a more global feel about it now. At the Giro it is all a bit crazy. For instance, once the main contenders, Maglia Rosa and the Italian heros have passed the tifosi start to descend in the middle of the race so as to cycle home the two/ three mountain passes to their respective villages before night fall.
I am always looking out for books on the Giro D'italia and have found and collected a few down the years but unfortunately they are usually in Italian. Therefore I am relegated to looking at the pictures and second guessing the odd sentence. I was really pleased to come across this book last week on the Rapha web site. Maglia Rosa - Triumph and tragedy at the Giro D'Italia by Herbie Sykes. Just received my copy the other day and very pleased.
